Weaving Memories: The Birth of Sumi and Me, a Fiber Art and Design Journey

In January 2016, a dream that had been quietly brewing for years finally took shape. Sumi and Me, a fiber art and design business, came into existence, inspired by a remarkable woman who had left an indelible mark on my life – my beloved grandmother, Masumi. This venture isn’t just about creating beautiful artwork and textiles; it is a tribute to the legacy of love, creativity, and craftsmanship she had passed down to me.

Masumi, a name that means "true purity; increasing beauty" in Japanese, couldn't have been a more fitting inspiration for Sumi and Me. Her name encapsulates the essence of what my business aims to achieve - creating art that not only adds beauty to the world, but does so with a pure heart and genuine dedication.

My relationship with Masumi was complex during my younger years. We had our share of hurt, disagreements, and misunderstandings, as is often the case between generations. However, as we both grew older, our connection deepened and became more beautiful, much like the intricate patterns she wove into her crafts.

After she passed away, I stumbled upon a treasure trove of journals, diaries, and letters that revealed the untold chapters of her life. These documents unveiled a world of resilience and fortitude that she had rarely spoken about. She had lived through the harrowing years of World War II, enduring unimaginable trials and hardships. Learning more about her story gave me a profound understanding of the woman she was and the strength she possessed.

Sumi and Me isn't just about creating beautiful art; it's also about fostering a sense of community. I believe that art has the power to bring people together, to tell stories, and to celebrate the richness of human creativity. Through tutorials, collaborations, and shared demonstrations, my aim is to create a space where individuals can connect, learn, and be inspired by the world of fiber art & design.

As we continue to weave our story, one thread at a time, we remain dedicated to the values that inspired the birth of Sumi and Me – honoring the past, embracing God’s current work, and celebrating the beauty of handmade artistry. My grandmother's legacy lives on in every stitch.

Sumi and Me is more than a business; it's a tribute to the enduring bond between generations, a testament to the power of creativity, and a reminder that the threads of love and artistry can transcend time and space, just as her name, Masumi, signifies true purity and increasing beauty.
